Mogadishu, Somalia — Journalists, media practitioners and persons with disabilities have called for stronger disability inclusion in Somali media following a two-day training held on July 22–23, 2026 at Sahafi Hotel in Mogadishu, organized by CAFIS with financial support from the VIKES Foundation.
The training focused on promoting ethical, respectful and accessible reporting on disability, where participants discussed key challenges facing persons with disabilities, including discrimination, negative attitudes and limited access to information, while also exploring practical solutions such as the use of captions, sign-language interpretation, audio descriptions and accessible digital content.
Participants were encouraged to avoid stereotypes and instead portray persons with disabilities as active members of society, including professionals, leaders and experts, while committing to the use of respectful language and increasing the visibility and participation of persons with disabilities in media coverage.
Organizers emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between media organizations, civil society and disability groups to build a more inclusive and accessible media environment in Somalia.
